Treasurer Osborn Uncovers $10 Million in Uncashed State Checks Owed to Nebraska Resident
Autodials for Unclaimed Property, eBay auction also on schedule
Lincoln, Neb.- On September 8, 2009, Nebraska State Treasurer Shane Osborn will contact nearly 25,000 Nebraskans as he sets out to do something that has never been done before: return more than $10 million in uncashed state checks to their rightful owners.
Uncashed checks are state-issued warrants like payroll checks, child support payments, and tax refunds that have been lost, misplaced, or forgotten about by Nebraska residents.
“This is an unprecedented effort because returning uncashed state checks has never before been given priority,” Treasurer Osborn said. “I am very grateful to Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman and the State Risk Management Division for their willingness to assist my office in implementing an aggressive strategy to reunite our constituents with their money.”
After compiling the list of Nebraskans who were owed uncashed state checks, Treasurer Osborn used skip-tracers to find accurate addresses or surviving heirs for the owners. When a holder is located, the Treasurer’s office will then refer their claim to the State Risk Management Division for payment.
Said Osborn: “This initiative underscores my fundamental belief about lost property: our government has an obligation to do everything in its power to return this money to the hard-working Nebraskans all across our state. After all, this is their money.”
Also on September 8th, Treasurer Osborn will use automated phone calls to notify over 50,000 Nebraskans that they are owed unclaimed property and will resume eBay auctions of over 200 items left in unclaimed safe deposit boxes like gold and silver coins, Confederate currency, diamond jewelry, and Husker memorabilia. The eBay will be found on the front page of the Treasurer’s website and auctions will run weekly for a month.
