State Treasurer Shane Osborn announces essay winners
Lincoln, Neb. – Nebraska State Treasurer Shane Osborn is pleased to announce the winners of the 7th annual “Why I Want to Go to College” essay contest. The contest, sponsored in conjunction with the Omaha Royals Baseball Club, received more than 600 entries and was open to all 7th and 8th grade students residing in and outside of Nebraska.
“I truly appreciate the efforts of each and every student who took the time to submit an entry,” Osborn said. “Not only were the essay’s thoughtful and honest, but they provided a unique perspective into the hopes and dreams of the individuals who will soon become the leaders of tomorrow.”
The essay was limited to 750 words and required each student to articulate their goals and future aspirations and detail the importance of a college education. A 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner was selected from each of Nebraska’s three Congressional Districts including a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner in the out-of-state category.

In addition, each winner will receive four (4) tickets to the Nebraska vs. Creighton baseball game on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Omaha’s Rosenblatt Stadium and four (4) Henry Doorly Zoo passes. 1st Place winners will also be treated to a one (1) night stay at a premier Omaha hotel.
